@font-face { font-family: “Calibri”; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 10pt; line-height: 115%; font-size: 11pt; font-family: “Times New Roman”; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; }

What is Magnesium Carbonate?

Magnesium carbonate may sound like some kind of volatile compound found bubbling over in a mad scientist’s beaker, but it’s not nearly that cool. Magnesium Carbonate in its most common form is something just about everyone of us has seen, we probably just called it by its street name: chalk.

Rock climbers, weight lifters, even LaBron James (wait that might be baby powder) use chalk as a drying agent when they need to have a good grip on something. Magnesium carbonate, and other similar minerals, can also be found in flooring, fireproofing, fire extinguishing compositions, cosmetics, dusting powder, and even your toothpaste. Its ability to function as a drying agent let to Magnesium Carbonate’s use as an additive in salt so it wouldn’t stick together in humid climates. It doesn’t react with food and is basically tasteless so it can also be found as a filler material and as a color retainer in some foods.

The uses for Magnesium Carbonate vary from industrial use in neoprene gloves to a smoke reducer in plastics to a food additive; but in the dietary world, Magnesium Carbonate can be used as a supplement to promote better protein synthesis or as a laxative.

Supplements

Magnesium plays a very important role in proper cell function. Low levels of magnesium in the blood can cause cells, nerves, muscles bones and the heart to not function properly. Most people get enough magnesium through a balanced diet but those who have deficiencies may need to take a supplement like Magnesium Carbonate to maintain proper health. Magnesium deficiencies can be caused by a wide variety of illnesses or self-induced problems. If you drink alcohol in excess, use diuretic pills or have a poor diet you could be losing Magnesium faster than your diet can replenish it. Diseases like diabetes, when not properly controlled, or intestinal absorption disorders can also lead to lower than normal levels of Magnesium. In these cases a Magnesium Carbonate supplement would help maintain proper cell function.

If you don’t have a Magnesium deficiency of some kind you are better off not taking Magnesium Carbonate. The balance of chemicals like Calcium and Magnesium in the blood makes sure muscles and nerves perform properly. If you have too much Magnesium in your system, it could lead to cramps, diarrhea, irritability, drowsiness even depression.

Final Thoughts

I don’t think I would recommend eating chalk when you feel like your Magnesium levels could be a little low. In all likelihood, the mineral content of your diet is just fine and there’s no need to lick the powdery white hands of that big guy at the gym about to lift a barbell that outweighs you car. On the other hand, Magnesium is a very important part of a healthy body and it’s important that you are getting enough of the mineral every day. If your diet does not provide what you need or you have certain habits or ailments that make you Magnesium deficient, Magnesium Carbonate supplements may be the answer.

What is Phase 2 Carb Blocker?

We’ve all heard of the Atkins diet. It just about put the pasta industry out of business and almost made me want to curl up in a ball and die at the thought of never eating bread again. The problem with carbohydrates isn’t that they are bad; in fact your body needs them to survive. Carbohydrates, found mostly in grains, are easily turned into glucose which your body uses for energy. In fact, grains are great because they pack a lot of energy into a small package. That only becomes a problem when they taste so darn good we end up eating way more than we need. The body, being the efficient energy saver it is, stores away the extra energy for a rainy day. Good idea for the body, but a bad idea for your summer bathing suit options.

The idea behind Phase 2 Carb Blocker is to change the way your body treats the carbohydrates since we can’t seem to change the amount of them we eat.

How Does Phase 2 Carb Blocker Work?

Phase 2 Carb Blocker is a natural extract from the white bean. It doesn’t have any stimulating properties and no known side effects. Studies indicate that Phase 2 Carb Blocker delays the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. In most cases your body would pack away that extra energy in the form of jiggley white fat right around your midsection. Phase 2 Carb Blocker inhibits an enzyme in the body known as amylase. Amylase is the enzyme responsible for turning carbohydrates into sugars which, if not burned by metabolism, are stored as fat. Instead of being stored, the carbohydrates are passed through the system as waste. Phase 2 Carb Blocker turns your insides into a Teflon coated skillet and the fat just slides right off.

Clinical Testing

Companies selling diet supplements will talk all day about how the ingredients in their pill are clinically tested. In most cases the tests are ambiguous at best and sometimes they are even made up. In the case of Phase 2 Carb Blocker, there have been legitimate inquiries done by several reputable institutions including the FDA. Phase 2 Carb Blocker is not approved by the FDA, despite what marketing material might say, but after reviewing the clinical data the FDA did say that they had no objection to the weight control and starch reduction claims made by the makers of Phase 2 Carb Blocker or products containing it.

Final Word

We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief knowing that those big bad carbs are ok to eat once again. Proper diet, exercise and a little self restraint are still the best tools to use in the battle of the bulge but ingredients like Phase 2 Carb Blocker can also be very useful. It’s especially hard to eat right today when we live our lives on the go. Lower carbohydrate meals may not be a feasible option when portability is key, so maybe now we can have our cake, light frosting of course, and our swimsuit too.

What is Astragalus?

Astragalus is not so much a single herb but the name given to a large genus of almost 3000 different plants. Most of these plants are small shrubs and green herbs. Some species of the Astragalus family are more commonly called milk-vetch, locoweed (in the United States) and goat’s thorn. Astagalus can be found growing in most temperate climates throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

The Astragalus variety commonly used for medicinal purposes is usually Astagalus propinquus, also known in the scientific community as Astragalus membranaceus. Since nobody really expects you to know the Latin names, asking for Astragalus will likely get you what you are looking for.

Medicinal Uses

The medicinal benefits of Astragalus have not been definitively proven or disproven by any reputable scientific study. Initial studies being conducted may indicate that Astragalus can act as a telomerase activator. Maybe you are a Ph.D. in Biology and telomerase is as common a word in your vocabulary as
“cat” but for the rest of us it may be a foreign concept. In basic terms, telomerase is a portion of your DNA that prevents damage to your DNA when it replicates. This is important since damaged cells can lead to premature aging or even cancer.

While there are no independent studies proving that Astragalus is an anti-aging cure, anecdotal evidence does exist suggesting Astragalus can be an effective telomerase activator. Many reputable companies have been trying to develop Astragalus into a viable supplement. One such company has found that a certain isolate of Astragalus, known by the catchy title of TA-65, ‘was associated with a statistically significant “age-reversal” effect in the immune system, in that it led to declines in the percentage of senescent cytotoxic T cells and natural killer cells after six to twelve months of use.’

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Even without electron microscopes and bubbling beakers, our friends on the other side of the globe seem to have figured out Astragalus’ benefits about a thousand years or so ahead of us in the Western world. Astragalus is known in Chinese folk medicine as “huang qi” or “yellow leader.” This ancient remedy is one of the 50 essential herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.

While the Chinese did not know about DNA, they did understand that Astragalus was an effective prescription to speed the healing of injuries and to increase overall immunity to disease. Ancient Chinese remedies are still practiced throughout the world and for practitioners in the modern United States, Astagalus is commonly used to aid digestion and boost metabolism. A company in Australia even uses Astragalus as an ingredient in a commercially available drug for the production of peripheral blood lymphocytes.

Final Word

Modern scientific analysis of ancient Chinese folk medicine has both proven and disproven specific herbal remedies. No independent tests have done either with the supposed benefits of Astragalus but the anecdotal evidence is mounting. The fact that it is gaining popularity and initial indicators are positive make it a viable option as an herbal remedy.

What is ?

In simple terms Bromelain is a series of enzymes which can break down proteins. Bromelain is a common substance found naturally in the stems and juice of pineapple. Today you can find Bromelain in stores as a supplement; but, almost everyone has used Bromelain at one time or another, likely without even knowing it. The enzymes in Bromelain are able to penetrate the surface of meat in a process called forking. (I’m not making that up.) The enzymes break down connective tissue which makes meat more tender when cooked.

The juice from cooked pineapple is not a good tenderizer since the enzymes are heat sensitive and no longer perform the same function when heated. The health benefits, if there are any, of Bromelain don’t stick around after the meat hits the barbeque so Bromelain can also be found as a supplement. It is not a common product in the United States but is one of the most popular over the counter supplements in Germany. In the German system of regulation, “Commision E” has approved the use of Bromelain for patients seeking relief from inflammation in the nose and sinuses due to surgery or injury.

Uses for Bromelain

Inflammation is the most common symptom treated with Bromelain. Swelling resulting from surgery or injury is the most frequent reason to use the supplement.

Those who suffer with sinusitis have also found a use for Bromelain to reduce congestion, improve breathing and suppress coughing.

As a dietary supplement, Bromelain can be helpful when you have digestive issues. Bromelain dissolves proteins which make it effective for treating digestive problems or irritable bowel syndrome. It is often used in conjunction with other enzymes that dissolve fats or starch like lipase and amylase.

Bromelain is also becoming a more popular treatment for arthritis.

Risks

There are more risks to consider with Bromelain that you would encounter with most natural remedies. The most common side effects are nausea indigestion or diarrhea, but the natural qualities of Bromelain can encourage bleeding. This is a serious risk for anyone taking medication that may increase risk of bleeding as a side effect.

Allergic reactions are also common with Bromelain. Allergies to pineapple are common and the root cause of the reaction is usually the Bromelain in the pineapple. Also, people who have allergies to latex, carrot, celery, fennel, rye, wheat, papain, bee venom or grass, birch or cypress pollens may also have similar reactions to Bromelain.

Anyone considering Bromelain for digestive health problems should consult a physician. If stomach problems turn out to be the result of an ulcer, the Bromelain could be making the problem worse.

Final Word

I don’t know the criteria “Commission E” in Germany uses to approve a substance, but there are absolutely no reputable scientific studies available that would confirm the medicinal qualities of Bromelain exist. It’s may be a scientific fact that Bromelain can help tenderize meat, but that’s where facts end and the homeopathic marketing machine begins.

Can our bodies really burn more calories than we consume?

What is the catabolic diet? The foods that are eaten on this program are said to have ‘negative calories’. The Diet claims that it takes more energy for your body to digest these foods than it takes to consume them. Thus eating these foods, the body has used more calories than it has absorbed. These foods form what is known as the catabolic diet.

Promoters of these programs claim that you will “lose weight faster than starvation”. They claim that it is excessive for the intestines. Dr Victor Lindlarh (son of Dr Henry Lindlarh the famous nutritionist) discovered certain foods have negative calories values and that people who he put on this diet lost more weight than people who were on a starvation diet. Studies have never proven this to be true though and Doctors have stated that staying on this diet for long time can be life threatening.

Foods are separated into high-grade catabolic and low-grade catabolic, based on the ratio of calories burned through digestion to calories consumed. Some high-grade catabolic fruits include: blueberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, grapefruit, oranges, plums, strawberries, raspberries, pears and watermelons. High-grade catabolic vegetables include artichokes, celery, sweet potato, asparagus, cucumbers, peppers, tomato, broccoli, eggplant, zucchini, Brussels sprouts, spinach, carrots and lettuce.

Pros of The Catabolic Diet

The Foods that are provided are low in calories, fat and high in nutrients. So if the claim that your body burns more calories digesting these foods is false at least we it does focus on foods that we know are truly good for you.

It is a diet that helps people to lose weight by eating and not starving

The catabolic diet is easy very little cooking and very fast to assemble.

Cons

Staying on this diet for a long period of time can be hazardous to your health and is not recommended by a Physician.

The list for meat is very small; Meat is not suggested for this diet.

Fresh fruits and vegetables can be expensive at certain times of the year, and raw vegetables are the most effective.

Clinical research that disproves the catabolic diet

Because every scientist knows that researching foods that take more calories to digest them than they actually contain is both stupid and a waste of time, there have been no studies done on the effectiveness of the diet alone. If someone were to lose weight on the catabolic diet it would be because the foods they were eating were very low in calories and fat, not because they were consuming negative calorie foods. Sorry Dr. Lindlahr.

Of course with any diet you will have pros and cons that fit with your personal lifestyle. Make sure you do your homework and read the fine print. This diet seems to claim that medical doctors have quoted that you will lose weight three times faster than starvation.

What is Chamomile?

Imagine yourself at the end of a long hard day. All you want to do is take your shoes off and curl up on the couch. That’s probably the image that comes to mind when you think of Chamomile. Chamomile tea is one of the most popular herbal teas available and there’s a good chance most of us have been the person curled up next to fire like in the advertisements. This little flower variety is now being used for an even wider array of problems ranging from heart disease to eczema.

Chamomile is a general term given to a wide variety of daisy-like plants that grow all over the world in temperate climates. The name “Chamomile” or the common “Camomile” comes to us via the French language from the original Latin and Greek word that meant “earth apple.”

Uses of Chamomile

The MedlinePlus database, maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health, lists more than 100 ailments for which Chamomile has been used. They are careful to caution that there is not enough evidence to support its use for any condition.

Of the 100 listed uses only 15 had any scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of Chamomile as an herbal remedy. Of these 15, 14 are said to have “unclear scientific evidence” supporting their traditional use.

In support of the claim that Chamomile can be used as a relaxant and sleep aid, research into Chamomile has found certain elements in the flower that are known to be mild tranquilizers. A certain flavonoid, Chrysin, found in Chamomile has been found to be anxiolytic, meaning it relieves the symptoms of anxiety. This discovery confirms Chamomile’s calming effects and explains why it’s an effective sleep aid. Of the 15 uses supported by some kind of scientific evidence, only the calming properties were excluded from the “unclear scientific evidence” category.

Many people also use Chamomile to relive stomach discomfort. I can personally say it was effective in this area. A personal experience does not make something true but if it could help me with stomach issues resulting from living in the third world it may be effective for others with gastrointestinal issues.

Risks

Since Chamomile is one of the most popular and most consumed herbal teas, there have been an inadequate number of studies done into the potential allergic reactions to Chamomile. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine cautions that rare allergic reactions like skin rash, sedation or miscarriage can occur.

Final Word

Chamomile has been in use for so long it may seem strange why it warrants an article into its medical effects. Today there are a number of companies attempting to market the use of Chamomile as a natural remedy for everything that ails you. Some even tout its weight loss properties. It is more than likely that these claims are grossly overstated. It may be asking too much for a little flower to help you relax and cure everything else that’s wrong with you.

Now we are going to take a good look at the formula Adapexin. This is one of the many diet supplements that are now available via the Internet without a doctor’s prescription.

There are eight key active ingredients found in Adapexin. These are Phenylethylamine (improves mood, reduces hunger, and minimizes stress), Glucomannan (lowers body fat and minimizes hunger), Chromax (curbs appetite, improves lean muscle mass, and reduces calorie intake), Raspberry Ketones (increases the user’s metabolism), Evodiamine (helps burn off fat), Ginger Root (suppresses hunger), Caffeine Anhydrous (increases the user’s metabolism and heightens energy), and Vitamin B12 (boosts energy and minimizes hunger).

I love Glucomannan – in fact it was just featured on the Dr.Oz show – where he said it is “The Best Diet Pill of 2010″. It is nature’s clinically proven appetite suppressant and so much more!
